"...an extraordinary educational experience...In the twenty years I have spent in legal education - as a law professor, and later as the director of the New Mexico Law Related Education Project - I have rarely witnessed such an engaging, challenging and thoroughly accessible presentation of complex issues...Charlie and Karen sing and play beautifully. Both are wonderful story-tellers."
- Karl E. Johnson, Attorney at Law, Albuquerque, NM
"...a very special and engaging performance from two wonderfully talented and insightful performers who kept the audience wholly mesmerized... a remarkable integration of letters and speeches and biographies, and... of contemporary people... to show the persistence of the hard issues and the importance of the Sacco and Vanzetti experience."The 76 years since the execution of Nicola Sacco & Bartolomeo Vanzetti has a lot to say to us today about courage, tolerance, political scapegoating and the immigrant experience.
- Neil Thomas Proto, Attorney at Law, Washington, D.C., author of "Sacco and Vanzetti: An Unfinished American Injustice."
The issues of the trial - suspicion and mistreatment of immigrants leading to mass arrests with no due process; persecution of people for their political views and stirring up bigotry by labeling people anarchists and terrorists; harassment of labor organizers; capital punishment; Sacco & Vanzetti's eloquent rejection of war - all ring very true today.
There are two different performance pieces, a workshop and a concert, one favoring history and spoken word, one favoring song, both combining spoken word and music to remember Sacco & Vanzetti. They have been very powerful in performance, not just because of the strength of the words by and about these two good men, but also because of their relevance to today's political climate.
We've performed these programs with great response at the Law School of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies AFL-CIO, for the Massachusetts Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty in Springfield MA, and for the City of New Haven, Connecticut's Sacco & Vanzetti commemoration. The New Haven performance has been released as a live concert CD.
We would like to present the Sacco and Vanzetti story in union halls, churches, schools, community groups and college campuses. Please contact us if you are interested in bringing this program to your area.
